1 Introduction This chapter summarizes early scientific research carried out to understand the basic mechanisms of rubber friction. Relevant findings of the investigations are presented that led to the current acceptance of three distinct friction forces that develop when rubber slides on a harder surface: (1) adhesion, (2) bulk deformation hysteresis, and (3) wear. Included in the studies discussed in this chapter are three investigations designed to determine the variation of the rubber friction force with increasing pressure.
