By Robert Horigan Smith

Taking a mechanistic process that emphasizes the actual habit of rubber because it slides, Analyzing Friction within the layout of Rubber items and Their Paired Surfaces integrates the engineering and clinical proof demonstrating that the legislation of steel friction don't follow to rubber. The booklet additionally offers a newly built, scientifically dependent unified conception of rubber friction that includes a fourth simple rubber friction strength: floor deformation hysteresis.

With functions that phenomenologically deal with either static and dynamic rubber friction, the e-book bargains sensible tips for enforcing the unified concept within the research and layout approaches. using this conception allows accomplished calculations of rubber friction, thereby delivering possibilities to reinforce public security. whereas the idea applies to all elastomeric items the place friction is an argument, the writer basically makes a speciality of:

•          studying friction within the layout of rubber tires and their contacted pavements

•          The geometric layout of roadways

•          motorcar twist of fate reconstruction

•          reading slip resistance within the layout of sneakers and their contacted strolling surfaces

Supported by way of large analytical proof, this publication info what rubber friction is and why it behaves how it does.

Example text

The purposes of the book are to: • Demonstrate that the laws of metallic do not apply to rubber. • Present, exemplify, and apply a new, unified theory of rubber friction incorporating a fourth basic rubber friction force: surface deformation hysteresis, the existence of which was first hypothesized in 1965. Although the newly developed theory is applicable to all rubber products for which friction is an issue, use of the theory will be exemplified by focusing on the following important fields: • Analysis of friction in the design of rubber tires and their contacted pavements, • Geometric design of roadways, • Motor vehicle accident reconstruction, and • Analysis of heel and sole slip resistance in the design of footwear and their contacted walking surfaces.

1 Introduction This chapter summarizes early scientific research carried out to understand the basic mechanisms of rubber friction. Relevant findings of the investigations are presented that led to the current acceptance of three distinct friction forces that develop when rubber slides on a harder surface: (1) adhesion, (2) bulk deformation hysteresis, and (3) wear. Included in the studies discussed in this chapter are three investigations designed to determine the variation of the rubber friction force with increasing pressure.
